Speedwriting Shorthand
If you want to make some extra money or even start your own business with shorthand services, you will find that a lot of clients need this skill by their side for documentation purposes. Shorthand must be learned through a certification process or a class on shorthand, a multitude of these can be found online or at local colleges.
It is not something we are used to doing naturally. When you look at a piece of paper where someone has written in shorthand you might think it is a written code or even another language all together. In some ways it is actually both.
Sometimes shorthand can also be called speedwriting, because, in essence that is what you are doing. Just imagine (or even try this yourself) writing down a complete conversation on a pad of paper and a pen. It is really difficult! However, if you learned shorthand or speedwriting you would be able to do just that!
You can use this skill to write shorthand for doctors, solicitors, seminar speakers, and many more professionals. You can make great money with this skill, as there are not that many people out there who have this skill and can offer it as a service or business. As a professional offering your shorthand or speedwriting skills you can charge up to $25 an hour. Make profits part time for extra cash or start your own business with this newfound skill.
If you don’t know how to do shorthand then how about typing up dictated tapes from doctors, solicitors etc? This is known as a transcription service.
Transcribing documents for clients is rather easy, and even easier if you can type quickly. You take the tapes home and listen to them, typing up what you hear into a document. You should have some equipment for transcribing services, such as a headset to listen to the tape while you are typing, transcription software, and a foot pedal that will allow you to control the software without having to stop typing or even take your hands away from the keyboard.
The best part about transcription services is that you do not really need to learn a new skill or get a certificate to show what you can do. However, since you will be charging by the minute or hour you should learn how to type more quickly so you can earn more profits from your transcription services.
There are free tutorials online that can calculate how fast you can type per minute, and what your percentage of accuracy is. I recommend that you use one of these programs to help you determine how fast you can type so you can tell your potential clients. You should also use this software to teach yourself how to type even faster!
If you wanted to go into a specified field such as medical transcription then you would need to take some classes and get certified to do this work since you will have to know specific medical terms in order to work efficiently.
Start off by offering your services for free, this will get definitely get you work and you will be learning what to expect, the phrases, the people, the deadlines etc. Once you have some experience then as a transcription professional you can charge $20 an hour and you get to work from home!
