Court Stenographers

court stenographers
How does a court stenographer’s machine work?

The Stenograph machine: Traditionally, court reporters use stenograph machines that enable them to type at speeds of up to 225 words a minute. The average person usually speaks 160 to 180 words a minute. The stenograph machines have a syllable-based system of 24 keys that spells words phonetically, the way they sound, rather than how they are actually spelled. Stenographers, commonly known as court reporters, use a keyboard with only 25 keys (there are about 100 on a standard computer keyboard) that account for just 13 consonants and 4 vowels.

Court Transcript

court transcript
Following is a set of responses from Rebecca Forman, who has been working as a court reporter in the Manhattan federal courthouse since February 2003.

Question:
How much did you earn your first year out of school?
I have almost completed my first year of court reporting school in Philadelphia, and am curious to know.
— Posted by Kimberly

Answer:
My first year, in 2000, I made $45,000.

Question:
Why do court reporters charge so much per page? The court reporting fee for an all-day deposition can be well over $1,000. Then, for additional copies, a court reporter will charge the same or similar amount to the other parties in the case. These are outrageous sums.
— Posted by anon

Answer:
Because I work in court, the page rates that I charge are set by the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. What you are referring to, Anonymous, is the page rate for freelance court reporters. Freelance court reporters work for agencies and only receive a percentage of the amount of money the parties pay for the transcript. A court reporter does not get paid until the final transcript is completed. For an all-day deposition, which can be 8 or 9 or 10 hours, transcription can take days. So the money that is paid for the transcript is not just for the one day of the deposition. It is to compensate the reporter for the transcription time.

Court reporters are highly skilled workers. Just as a highly skilled attorney or expert charges for their time at an all-day deposition, so too does the court reporter.

Question:
If you’re not 100 percent sure you understand something said in court by a lawyer, witness, defendant or judge, do you always ask the person to repeat it, or do you sometimes just make your best guess? Thanks!
— Posted by Michael Lengyel

Answer:
Hi, Michael. This is a great question because it’s something that happens a lot. A lawyer will be speaking and suddenly drop his voice for one word, or a juror coughs while a witness is giving an answer, or someone says a phrase in Latin that I’ve never heard of before. It takes experience to know what to do in each instance. There are three options that come to mind: Take an educated guess, interrupt and ask the speaker to repeat what was said, or ask the speaker after the proceeding to tell you what they said.

If I cannot hear what the person is saying at all, I will generally interrupt and ask the speaker to repeat it. If it’s a phrase that I’ve never heard before, I write it on the machine phonetically and Google it at my desk or ask my colleagues. The judges’ law clerks are also a great source of information. If it’s a word or phrase that I wrote down phonetically at the time it’s said but it doesn’t make sense to me, I will print that page of the transcript during a break and show it to the speaker and ask for clarification. People always make the time to help clarify a word or phrase, because they know I’m working hard to give them a transcript that is accurate.

Question:
How would you compare the stressors of working in a restaurant kitchen to working in a courtroom?
— Posted by Elizabeth

Answer:
Working in a courtroom and working in a kitchen have some similarities, actually. Both jobs are extremely time sensitive. Both jobs require special training and skill using my hands. Both the baker and the court reporter are sort of invisible, but people appreciate the end product. I found working in a professional kitchen to be unbearably stressful, so even on the busiest, hardest day in court, I prefer being a court reporter to being a baker. One difference is, professional kitchens are sweltering and the courtrooms tend to be freezing. Also, baking is creative and court reporting definitely is not.

Court Reporting Training

court reporting training

Imagine a six-figure income and some familiar figures may come to mind. Doctors, lawyers and senior executives are no strangers to incomes above $ 100,000 but not realize the pay scale possible for those who make a living transcribing court cases.

Not every court reporter earns six figures – average earnings of the race hover around half that – but can be more experienced and qualified, and in some cases they do.

A Day in the Life of a Court Reporter
court reporters capture live speech from trials and testimony before the trial, the record in text form for the record. Instead of using a traditional keyboard or computer, stenographers using a stenographic machine. By pressing various keys on the machine allows the reporter to record various sounds, words or phrases. reporting and audio voice writing are also popular methods, and court reporters often try all three before deciding on the method that works best for them.

Accuracy on a budget is an essential skill, and judges and lawyers, court reporters value for documents they create. His days as a court reporter may start with a tank in the morning before trial, free time to review your file, and one or two trials. If you do not have a scheduled trial, you can go to work transcription independent press conferences or television programs that receive real-time viewers.

Freelancing as a Court Reporter
How can a court reporter earn six figures? By working independently in the court system they serve. Freelance work is not necessary, but taking a qualified court reporter in the extra work can earn money through the page-as long as needed. CNN Money reports that experienced court reporters can earn up to $ 88,171 in the state of New York Supreme Court, with freelance work may push that figure more than $ 100,000. Freelancing is a way of establishing their own income, in that sense, although the nature of the work constitutes a reliable salary is not always guaranteed.

Typical Court Reporter Salaries
Regarding the average annual salary (not including self-employment) for the industries with the highest level of employment of court reporters, as reported by Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS):

• Support Services: $ 44,260
• Local government: $ 49,950
• Employment services: $ 43,680
• Federal Executive Branch: $ 50,380

Training can not guarantee a certain salary, and you can earn more depending on their skills and education. Depending on your desire for free-lance, which may be more important than learning a series of techniques and stenographic equipment.

Court Reporter Career Training Programs
Education is essential for anyone wanting to work as a court reporter. Students typically target capture 225 words per minute – a requirement for Federal employment – using a machine stenographic. The BLS reports that the training may include instruction on the job and 33-month averages. Formal training is popular associate degree level.

Employment for court reporters is expected to grow 25 percent over the next years, adding an estimated 4,700 new jobs through 2016. Consider a career in court reporting as a job every time can reward your attention to detail.

Stenographer Career

stenographer career

Stenographers, more appropriately called court reporters, provide a legal accurate record of proceedings, meetings, and any event where exact written transcripts are necessary. They may also provide help to judges and lawyers who need information from official records. Stenographers not only record court proceedings; they also record daily and special events for the local, state, and federal government. The closed captioning on television is also the work of stenographers–in this case they are called stenocaptioners–where live programming is typed for hearing impaired viewers to see.

Qualifications vary anywhere from one year all the way to almost four years. Voice writing takes the least amount of time, while stenotypist education requires the longest. There are several technical/vocational schools, community/junior colleges, and colleges and universities across the country that offer a court reporting/transcription degree. In addition to training, states have their own requirements. Some states require the candidate to pass a state-administered test; other states require licensure. Some states only require the potential court reporter to be a notary. Certification by a professional organization is usually mandatory. There are different levels of certification and all reflect highly on the individual.

According to the BLS, www.bls.gov, the occupation of court reporter is expected to grow as fast as average for all occupations; the projections go through the year 2014. The average court reporter earned $42,920 per year in 2004.

Court Reporters

court reporters

For many years, the most technologically advanced in the court files was the shorthand machine. A result of modern typewriter, this “mechanical Wonder” allowed court reporters to transcribe even the fastest speaker accurately. And while the general population of business became more and more computerized technology in the courtroom remained relatively unchanged.

But in the last decade things have changed.

Currently, only one aspect of the rights of a court reporter has not been improved computer technology. Let’s look at some of these developments and how they are helping lawyers enjoy a better end product and make life reporter easier that way.

Computer Indexing
In the past, a court reporter could compile a written record of a hearing or deposition and report form for your customer. A person, usually a paralegal, you would go through the document at hand and highlight relevant passages, or search for hours in an attempt to find a reference to a person, place or thing.

Today, computer indexing gives the court reporter can order any transcription by keyword or phrase. These documents come through “soft copy” to the office of the law and are already marked by the client, specific mention of an event or anything that the lawyer needs to make better use of the document.

Video Court Reporting
It seems like yesterday that video recorders devices are large, clumsy, which took two people to handle. Now that VCRs have been reduced in size, with improved quality, more and more services court reports are used to provide a video recording of depositions, trials and other important procedures. In addition, the ability to create digital copies of these events makes them much easier to email or burn it to disc copying and distribution.

The Internet
The choice a court reporter has also become easier as a result of computer technology. Thanks to the Internet, lawyers can now find its reporter of the court with the click of a mouse. Many companies reporting the highest court in the country support and offer online booking services that make a reporter easier than ever.

Text Type of Technology
An interesting development in computer technology has been the voice to text software is making the rounds in law firms and court reporting services throughout the country. This software allows a person speaking into a microphone, and automatically incorporated words in a word processing document. The process is not perfect, but gives individuals a head start in the transcription process. For information and impeccable work transcription but a live person is still the best, most cost-efficient way of doing things.

Will technology make the reporter court obsolete?

New technologies that have entered the court of world reports only serve to improve human activity. The fact is that there will always be a need for the human element in judicial information. Understanding the flow of dialogue, soft-spoken words and emphasis are all things that man is doing better than a machine.
