Speedwriting Shorthand

If you want to make some extra money or even start your own business with shorthand services, you will find that a lot of clients need this skill by their side for documentation purposes. Shorthand must be learned through a certification process or a class on shorthand, a multitude of these can be found online or at local colleges.

It is not something we are used to doing naturally. When you look at a piece of paper where someone has written in shorthand you might think it is a written code or even another language all together. In some ways it is actually both.

Sometimes shorthand can also be called speedwriting, because, in essence that is what you are doing. Just imagine (or even try this yourself) writing down a complete conversation on a pad of paper and a pen. It is really difficult! However, if you learned shorthand or speedwriting you would be able to do just that!

You can use this skill to write shorthand for doctors, solicitors, seminar speakers, and many more professionals. You can make great money with this skill, as there are not that many people out there who have this skill and can offer it as a service or business. As a professional offering your shorthand or speedwriting skills you can charge up to $25 an hour. Make profits part time for extra cash or start your own business with this newfound skill.

If you don’t know how to do shorthand then how about typing up dictated tapes from doctors, solicitors etc? This is known as a transcription service.

Transcribing documents for clients is rather easy, and even easier if you can type quickly. You take the tapes home and listen to them, typing up what you hear into a document. You should have some equipment for transcribing services, such as a headset to listen to the tape while you are typing, transcription software, and a foot pedal that will allow you to control the software without having to stop typing or even take your hands away from the keyboard.

The best part about transcription services is that you do not really need to learn a new skill or get a certificate to show what you can do. However, since you will be charging by the minute or hour you should learn how to type more quickly so you can earn more profits from your transcription services.

There are free tutorials online that can calculate how fast you can type per minute, and what your percentage of accuracy is. I recommend that you use one of these programs to help you determine how fast you can type so you can tell your potential clients. You should also use this software to teach yourself how to type even faster!

If you wanted to go into a specified field such as medical transcription then you would need to take some classes and get certified to do this work since you will have to know specific medical terms in order to work efficiently.

Start off by offering your services for free, this will get definitely get you work and you will be learning what to expect, the phrases, the people, the deadlines etc. Once you have some experience then as a transcription professional you can charge $20 an hour and you get to work from home!

Learn Shorthand

learn shorthand
High shorthand speeds can be achieved if reporters prepare well, learn shortcuts and practice regularly. Teeline is the preferred shorthand system for journalists. It can seem intimidating at first, but with the right approach it can soon feel like second nature.

Be Prepared
Use a gel ink pen. They write clearly and are unlikely to leak all over the page. They’re also said to increase speeds by up to five words per minute.

Never rely on just one pen. The worst thing that can happen is to run out of ink halfway through an exam. Have at least three others close to hand with their lids removed.

Use a ring-bound reporter’s notepad. They’re far easier to hold steady than A4 sheets of paper and are easy to flip from page to page – saving valuable time.

Invest in a good Teeline textbook. They will take you through the basis of the shorthand alphabet and special outlines, as well as providing useful exercises.
Learn the Alphabet

Teeline textbooks will contain the basic outlines for the 26 letters of the alphabet. Students should familiarize themselves with these by “drilling” – or writing each one over and over again.

Once the student has mastered these symbols, and the way they blend with each other, they should be able to start forming outlines based on Teeline’s basic theory.

Quick outlines have been devised for some of the most common words in the English alphabet. These include “and”, “from”, “would” and “like”.

Other special outlines cover prefixes, suffixes and common combination of letters, such as “pr”, “ing”, “able” and “nce”.

Some word groupings tend to crop up in test passages again and again. Phrases like “for example”, “as far as”, “I am not sure”, and “I would like to be able” can be reduced to several strokes of the pen.

There are also special outlines for less generic words and phrases (many of which will be found in Teeline exams), including “European Union”, “supermarket” and “multi-storey car park”

Keep Practicing
Some teachers encourage two hours of practice a day. But students should try and get as much in as they can whenever possible.

Most teachers will be able to provide taped dictations at varying speeds. Students can also obtain passages to tape themselves or get a fried or family member to dictate to them.

Having a pad handy while watching TV news reports can be another way of getting to grips with words and phrases that will crop up during exams.

As soon as time is up, go back to the outlines that are circled, or any gaps that have been left. The chances are the context of the sentence will act as a clue.

Speedwriting

Speedwriting
If you’ve ever longed for a career in legal, consider a career as a court reporter. Becoming a Court Reporter requires certain skills and attributes in order to succeed. Although some of these skills can be learned, if you are considering a career in Court Reporting, you should:

  • Have strong English skills
  • Have the ability to stay focused and concentrate for long periods of time
  • Enjoy and be comfortable with technology and have the ability to learn advanced skills
  • Have good keyboarding skills
  • Have the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Be an audio learner – Reporters spend a great deal of time listening
  • Be able to tune out background noise and get in your zone

The educational requirements to become a court reporter vary with the specialties and the type of reporting you want to pursue. You can become a novice voice writer within about a year, but a real-time stenotypist requires around three years of training. And the more experience you gain, the higher pay you will make along with working in higher profile court cases.

Court reporter training is offered by, vocational schools, technical schools, and colleges. There are many types and levels of court reporter certification, depending on the specialty chosen.

The National court reporters Association or NCRA and other certified programs require students to complete an approved preset curriculum, prior to being eligible to take the certification exam.

To graduate, students typically will need a machine shorthand speed of 225 words per minute or higher. The exam tests written knowledge, speed, and accuracy.

In some states, a state certification is required, which means you will need to take the exam offered by the state. Otherwise, in order to be certified, you need to take the certification exam offered by the NCRA. You should check to see what your state and the Federal Government requires in the line of education and certification for your desired specialty.

In order to maintain the certification, reporters must earn 3.0 continuing education units (CEU) every three years. One CEU equals 10 hours of additional instruction. CEU’s may be lectures, classes, or other educational experiences approved by the NCRA.

Membership with the National Court Reporters Association is an organization every student should consider. They offer an abundance of information to their members and have a reduced fee for students.

Court reporting is an exciting career. You will work alongside attorneys, judges and other legal staff in a courtroom setting. The career opportunities are good and the outlook for a position as a court reporter is growing as legal proceedings are not going to be cut back anytime soon. If you’re interested in working in a legal career, but the thought of years of school to become an attorney sounds like to much to you, then consider a career as a court reporter. You’ll be where the action is at. In addition, the pay is excellent and the opportunities are growing every year.
